Why are product certifications required?
South African law requires certification or a licence when selling and storing certain products, especially those related to safety, human consumption, health, or specific industries. Compliance certification or licensing ensures that products meet specific standards and requirements, guaranteeing the safety and quality of the stored and sold products on takealot.com.
We, therefore, require that you submit relevant certification/license documentation for our records as part of ensuring overall compliance by all merchants on takealot.com.
How can you submit your Certificate or License?
Ensuring that your products comply with legal and regulatory requirements is essential. To facilitate this, we have streamlined the process for submitting your compliance documents. Here’s how you can upload your certificate or license through the Seller portal:
- Sign in to the Seller Portal: Log in to the Seller Portal.
- Navigate to the Account Page: Once you log in, on the dashboard, navigate to the top right nav bar, click the profile icon to open the dropdown menu, and click ‘Account’ to open the Account page.
- Navigate to the Compliance tab: On the Account page, click to open the ‘Compliance tab’ to manage all your compliance-related activities.
- Upload Your Compliance Certificate: The Compliance tab allows users to upload their compliance documentation for the specific regulation that applies to their product category. Click the ‘Pencil Icon’ next to the corresponding product category to upload compliance-related documentation. Ensure your document is in an acceptable format (e.g., PDF, PNG, JPG and JPEG) and contains all the necessary information, as no amendments can be made once submitted. Then, click the ‘Submit' button.
- Compliance Team Review: After you submit your compliance-related documentation, The Compliance Team will have access to review it. They will assess the document to ensure it meets all the required standards and regulations.
- Await Email Notification: Once the review process is complete, you will receive an email notification with the result. The Compliance Team will notify you if your document is approved and can proceed with listing your products. If there are issues with your document, you will receive instructions on how to rectify them.
- Category Access: If your compliance review is successful, the previously unavailable category will be unlocked, and you can continue with the product listing process.
Please note that it remains the seller's responsibility to obtain and submit any relevant legal documentation or certification as required by South African law and regulatory bodies. Please get in touch with our support team if you have any questions or require assistance.

Disinfectants, Antiseptics and Germicides
Since there is overlap with regard to the place of use and the control of the disinfectants, antiseptics and germicides, a risk based approach is utilised to identify the appropriate regulatory pathway of these products.
This risk based approach, summarised in Table 1 below, recognises:
- the application surface either as human skin or an inanimate surface;
- the place of use Home Public venues e.g. schools, toilets at train stations, toilets at taxi ranks, restaurants; Health institutions, Health professional consulting rooms, clinics, and Operating room; Burn ward; Intensive Care Unit (ICU); and
- the intended use / claim – anti-bacterial / antiseptic / germicide / disinfectant.
Based on the above table - certification will be required as follows:
- If A/S, A/H, B/S, B/H, C/S then require NRCS.
- If C/H, D/S, D/H then require SAHPRA Medical Device licence
- If any refer to being applied to both, then require NRCS and Medical Device licence
- If D/S is selected, where the product will be used for the last form of sterilization, the product is deemed a Class C Medical Device which may not be listed on takealot.com
Please consult this PDF for the full SAPHRA guidelines: Status of Disinfectants, Antiseptics and Germicides
Attributes to support the above criteria will be added as a listing requirement to allow merchants to appropriately select the place of use and application surface. Look out for attributes called:
- Sanitiser: Place of Use
- Sanitiser: Application Surface
Important!
The Compliance Team will only accept new product listings with the required certification. Existing products that do not have valid certificates or licenses will be disabled. The Compliance Team will only re-enable your existing offers once you submit the required relevant documentation.
